Thank you for the tips and for sharing your knowledge. Let the positive vibrations flow! Thanks®ards Urban Jennifer - Mon, May 11th, 2009 1:25 AM PDT I loved this website!! I'm always trying to write songs but I seem to get stuck with some problems to which u give some solutions here. Things like: "am I being too boring by using a simple Am C G F?"...I start the song talking about something and end it talking about something else, lack of consistency... Sometimes I've got an idea for the verse but not for the chorus and I get frustrated... I'm scared of ending up sounding like someone else... Lol u seem to get everything - or at least many useful things - here and in ur book. Thanks for sharing ur knowledge! Rebecca McKinley - Fri, May 8th, 2009 2:08 PM PDT Robin- I just wanted to say thank you so much! I'm about 3/4 of the way through your book and it is changing my life. You're giving my "creative engine" the "tracks" it needs to run on and I'll never be the same. Do you ever do songwriter's workshops? I'd love to hear you talk about this in person. You inspire me! Thank YOU, Rebecca. It's so great to hear this! As far as workshops, I give online song feedback once a month at SongU.com I also teach a 2-hour seminar for SongU. I just gave one so the next one will be in September. Be sure to sign up for my newsletter. There's a lots of info. Thanks! tanyaray - Wed, Apr 8th, 2009 5:10 AM PDT im a begginer&i know i can write a song but i need to focus on myself Clay Eisenhour - Fri, Apr 3rd, 2009 1:11 PM PDT Hi there, I'm looking to purchase Shortcuts to Hit Songwriting, but Amazon doesn't deliver up to Canada. I e-mailed taximusicbooks but haven't heard back from them yet. Any help in purchasing this book would be appreciated. Thanx Clay Hi Clay - You're right, Canada is the one place Amazon.com's fulfillment service won't ship to! We're trying to work around this and should have it fixed in a couple of months but we don't have a solution right now. If you know someone in the U.S. who can take delivery and send it on to you, that's been the only way we've found to deal with it so far. - Robin Jim Overton - Sat, Mar 28th, 2009 11:54 AM PDT I enjoyed your book. I didn't agree with everything you said, but most of it was very good. It was, for the most part well written and concise. I have a writing tip for you. Always know your metaphors. In Shortcut #9 you wrote, "Just imagine for a moment that you're a Formula One driver competing at the Indy 500." Formula One is a completely different racing series that has nothing to do with the Indy 500. Any open wheel racing fan will know this. You certainly know songwriting, but for your writings credibility sake, always know your metaphors. Thanks, Jim! I hope my songwriting tips are more helpful than my racing tips! :-) - Robin Gerry - Sat, Mar 28th, 2009 11:51 AM PDT I bought your book and started reading it last night. It made me want to write a song which i did today. Its so much better than anything ive done before. Who do you write a song or a poem. Brian Rice - Mon, Mar 23rd, 2009 4:44 PM PDT Hi Robin, thanks for your existence (I guess I should thank your parents for that). I've been trying to buy a copy of ' Shortcuts to Hit Songwriting...' on Amazon. I'm based in Edinburgh, Scotland and your book isn't available on Amazon. UK. Unfortunately, I've found that my 'Maestro' card isn't valid for purchases on the American Amazon. Do you know of an alternative method of payment I might use? Thanks. Best Regards, Brian Rice Chelsea - Wed, Mar 18th, 2009 7:38 PM PDT I have writen over 126 songs and I am only 13. I started when I learned how to write(no lie). I am very inspired when I listen to other songs. I actually take in the lyrics instead of everyone else my age who sings a song and doesn't even know what they are singing. I hope to become famous for writing songs. I already have copywrites on all of my songs that I have writen. Danielle - Sun, Mar 15th, 2009 7:11 AM PDT If I listen to a particular song that I like, I feel inspired to write a song but when I sit down to try, I end up writing the song I have just listened to. Do you have any tips? - Danielle Hi Danielle - It sounds like you are writing new lyrics but ending up with a melody that is similar to the hit song. Try this exercise to get you thinking about a new melody... Start by changing the pitches of the notes in the melody. Just sing or play a note that is higher or lower than the original. Then try changing the lengths of the phrases - chop a phrase in two by adding a pause in the middle and/or add a couple of notes and words on the end of a phrase to extend it. Now start playing with the timing of the notes: hold a short note longer, then speed up the notes that follow, or divide a long note into several short ones. By now, your melody should sound VERY different from the original. Your question inspired me to write a blog post on 'Playing With Melody."
